While visiting the Philippines, I stopped by Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC, so I'd like to introduce it to you!
Of course, KFC is also available in Japan.
You may think there is no need to mention it, but there is actually a big difference between KFC in Japan and this one.
That is, with or without rice!!
I grew up in the Philippines, so this is the standard KFC menu for me.
Japanese people are very surprised that KFC serves rice, but to me it is very strange why rice isn't served with a side dish like fried chicken.
It is no exaggeration to say that when you think of Japan, you think of rice!
It's written as the country of America... America... right...?
Anyway, I find it strange that there is no rice included with the side dish.
I asked a friend why KFC in Japan doesn't serve rice, and although I don't know the actual answer, he said that Japanese people don't think of fried chicken as a side dish, they think of it as a snack.
I don't know if that's true, but I was made painfully aware of the cultural differences that I honestly cannot understand.
This combination of spaghetti, fried chicken, and rice can be found at any fast food restaurant, including Jollibee, the national fast food restaurant in the Philippines, as well as KFC and McDonald's.
It is not uncommon to see customers ask for an extra plate and fill it up with gravy.
And at the KFC I visited this time, there was a gravy server next to the cutlery!
By the way, I'm the type who doesn't put any sauce on it lol
This is a chain store that is also found in Japan, but there are surprisingly many differences between its overseas stores and those in Japan.
It's fun to experience these differences and get a feel for what it's like being abroad!
If you have the opportunity, please try the combination of KFC fried chicken and rice while you're abroad!
And I hope that one day we'll have a menu with rice in Japan too!!
